Reclaim Your Smile with Dentures

Dentures are custom restorations that feature a gum-colored base and artificial teeth, and they have helped millions of patients renew the appearance and function of their smiles after extensive tooth loss. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Daniel Whiteman offers both traditional and implant-supported dentures at his Brookline, MA, practice.

Furthermore, Dr. Whiteman is the only dentist in Massachusetts who has been licensed to use Eclipse® dental resin, which allows him to create beautiful dentures and perform repairs here at our practice. To schedule a dentures consultation, contact our practice today.

Am I a Candidate?

Dentures are an ideal treatment for individuals who are missing most of or an entire arch of teeth. Patients who are missing several neighboring teeth may benefit from a partial denture, which works similarly to a full denture but is held in place with small metal clasps instead of suction. However, if you are missing just one or two teeth, a dental bridge or dental implant may be a better option.

With an implant-supported denture, you will never have to worry about your prosthesis moving out of position.

If you are considering an implant-supported option, you will also need adequate jawbone density to anchor the titanium posts that hold the denture in place. Implant-supported dentures require two surgeries: one to place the implant and one to attach the abutments that will connect the restoration to the implants. Because of this, it is important that candidates are in good oral health. Smoking, advanced gum disease, and jawbone recession can all postpone candidacy for implant-supported dentures. If you do not have adequate jawbone density to receive a dental implant, a bone graft can restore your candidacy.

Benefits of Full, Partial, and Implant-Supported Dentures

Dentures improve the appearance of your smile while restoring chewing function. Other benefits of this treatment include:

  • Younger-looking smile: If you are missing teeth, you may appear older than your actual age. By filling in the gaps in your smile, you can also fill in sunken-in cheeks, leaving you looking younger and healthier.
  • Improved speech: Missing teeth can impair your speech, especially when at the front of your mouth. Having a denture placed can make it easier to speak and easier for others to understand you.
  • Restored chewing function: Proper chewing is crucial to proper nutrition. It can also help prevent choking. Dentures restore chewing function while improving bite balance. This can prevent premature wear on your healthy teeth.
  • Affordable treatments: While some restorative treatments like implants have sizable up-front costs, patients benefit in the long-term by preventing shifting teeth and other associated dental problems. However, we accept cash, checks, credit, and major insurances to make sure that treatment is as affordable as possible. One of our friendly staff will explain the costs involved, so you can find the right treatment for your budget.

Implant-supported dentures offer benefits beyond those afforded by full and partial dentures. Implants provide a more stable platform for your prosthetic, preventing it from shifting. Implants also stimulate jawbone tissue, reducing the risk of jawbone recession.

Full vs. immediate vs. implant-supported vs. partial dentures

Partial Dentures

Where a complete denture is used to replace an entire dental arch, a partial denture is used to replace several missing teeth. Virtually anyone with several missing teeth is a good candidate for a partial denture. During your initial consultation, Dr. Whiteman will take an impression of your teeth. This will be used to make a wax model so Dr. Whiteman can design the fit and appearance of the partial denture. Once the final design is settled upon, a trusted dental lab will fabricate your partial denture, a step which may take a few weeks to complete. After your prosthetic is returned to the office, Dr. Whiteman will reach out to schedule a second appointment for you to come in and try it on.

Traditional Dentures

Held in place by clasps, adhesives, or suction, traditional dentures are affordable and removable. To create your traditional denture, we will take detailed impressions of your smile. The impressions will be sent to an off-site lab, where skilled technicians will carefully craft your restoration. Depending on your needs, Dr. Whiteman may be able to fabricate your traditional denture here in our office using innovative and lifelike Eclipse® dental resin. Traditional dentures need to be relined roughly every two years. Thanks to Dr. Whiteman's expertise with Eclipse® dental resin, we can perform on-site repairs and reline your dentures.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants are small metal posts that are surgically placed into the jaw, where they fuse with the surrounding bone to function just like artificial tooth roots. This revolutionary restorative treatment has allowed patients to experience dentures with an unparalleled level of comfort and stability. With an implant-supported denture, you will never have to worry about your prosthesis moving out of position, and you can continue to enjoy all of your favorite foods. Since dental implants return stimulation to the jaw, this can actually halt jawbone recession and help to prevent future tooth loss. Implant-supported dentures do not need to be relined, and they can last for many years with proper care.

In order to qualify for an implant-supported denture, your jaw must be strong enough to support dental implants. However, undergoing a bone grafting procedure can often restore necessary strength so that patients with weakened jawbones can safely undergo treatment. If you qualify for a complete implant-supported denture, we can often secure this type of prosthesis with only four dental implants by utilizing the innovative All-on-4® technique. With this approach, four dental implants are placed at a strategic angle in the strongest areas of the jaw. We can explain the full benefits of implant-supported dentures during a personal consultation to determine the type that is right for you. If you are anxious or nervous about the surgery, our Brookline clinic offers various sedation options to help patients feel comfortable during treatment.
