A Healthy Smile Starts at Home
Consistent at-home oral care is the foundation of a healthy smile. We advise all patients to brush twice per day using a fluoride-based toothpaste and floss before bed. Each brushing session should last roughly two minutes, and you should rinse thoroughly afterward. In addition, you can also use a tongue scraper and antibacterial mouth wash to enhance your disease- and bacteria-fighting efforts.
The Importance of Routine Visits
Patients should undergo routine examinations and cleanings every six months, while those who are at-risk for decay should schedule more frequent visits. These appointment allow us to evaluate your oral health and spot concerns at their earliest stages. A member of our team will perform a thorough visual inspection to look for potential issues, such as demineralization that may indicate the early formation of a cavity, and we may also take x-rays. After your examination, we will perform a dental cleaning by carefully removing all plaque, tartar, and food debris from on and between teeth.
We will also probe your gums for any periodontal pockets, which are often a symptom of gum disease. If you are diagnosed with gingivitis or a more advanced form of gum disease, the first line of treatment will be scaling and root planing, a type of periodontal treatment that is also known as a deep cleaning. A scaling and root planing procedure involves removing bacteria from above and below the gum line and smoothing rough spots on dental roots. We can also use ARESTIN®, an antibiotic, to treat any periodontal pockets.
When we do notice any symptoms that may indicate the presence of an oral health condition, Dr. Whiteman can perform a detailed saliva analysis to make a more accurate diagnosis.
Protecting Teeth from Decay
Fluoride is a unique mineral that helps to strengthen tooth enamel. If we find that your teeth are susceptible to decay, we can apply a concentrated fluoride solution. This quick and comfortable procedure takes mere minutes and can be particularly beneficial for child patients. Furthermore, we also offer sealants for children, which are applied to the biting surfaces of teeth to create a hardened layer of protection.
Addressing the Root Causes of Concerns
When we do notice any symptoms that may indicate the presence of an oral health condition, Dr. Whiteman can perform a detailed saliva analysis to make a more accurate diagnosis. If necessary, we can also use our intraoral camera to document pathologies and better monitor the progression of suspicious findings. When dental problems like tooth decay, infections, and gum disease are detected early, they can usually be effectively treated through minimally invasive methods.
