A Quick Dental Bridge Overview

Maybe you've heard of dental bridges, but don't actually know how they work. Our dentist offers Boston-area patients two kinds of dental bridges at our Brookline, MA, practice.

Traditional Bridges

A traditional bridge is made of lifelike artificial teeth, called pontics, flanked on either side by crowns that hold the bridge in place. A traditional bridge is an affordable, relatively quick way to replace missing teeth. To place a traditional bridge, our dentist will reduce the size of each tooth on either side of the gap so that crowns can be placed over them. Digital impressions of your smile will be taken and used to create the bridge. Pontics and crowns are usually made of dental-grade porcelain or IPS e.max®, a top-level dental ceramic. No surgery is involved in this procedure.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Instead of being held in place by crowns on natural teeth, the pontics in these bridges are secured by crowns attached to dental implants. Implants are titanium rods surgically anchored to your jawbone. After the implants are placed, they will require several months to fuse with the bone. A second, shorter procedure will be performed to attach connector pieces (called abutments) before the restoration can be placed. This advanced dentistry procedure is the most comprehensive form of dental restoration and is also used to support single crowns, partial dentures, and full dentures.

My wife is a patient and recommended Whiteman Dental to me. They do a great job! I liked them right away. They answer all questions, the work is great, and it's always a great experience. I highly recommend them! 2nd (new) review - I have been a patient for awhile. I had a great visit as always! Dr. Whiteman and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Great job! What a great dental experience for anyone who has had bad experiences in the past. Not only is everyone in the office friendly and inviting, but they truly know their stuff! The cleaning was quick and easy. I had to have a filling done and I felt no paid. Dr. Whiteman is a cheerful nice guy, one I would enjoy talking to even if he wasn't my dentist. Definitely 5 stars!

6 Dental Bridge Benefits

When one tooth or several teeth are missing, the gap impacts more than just the appearance of your smile. Dental bridges offer many benefits to our Brookline, MA, patients:
Number one

Improves Eating Functions

Biting or chewing hard or crunchy foods like fruits, nuts, or raw veggies can hurt if your gums are exposed due to missing a tooth or teeth. A dental bridge protects gum tissue and allows you to eat a healthier diet.

Number two

Restores Clear Speech

Your tongue and teeth work together to pronounce sounds clearly. Missing a tooth or teeth can cause lisped or garbled speech. A dental bridge gives your tongue a hard surface to work with again.

Number three

Stops Natural Teeth from Moving

When a tooth or teeth are missing, the teeth on either side of the gap can shift out of place. A dental bridge will prevent them from moving.

Number four

Provides a Healthier, More Youthful Look

Missing teeth can give your face a sunken, aged appearance. A dental bridge can fill out your face, making you look healthier and younger.

Number five

Evens Out Bite Force

If you are missing teeth on your right side, you might chew more on your left, which puts extra force on that side of your jaw. Over time this can cause tooth wear and pain. A dental bridge can distribute your bite evenly.

Number six

Boosts Self-Esteem

Many people with missing teeth avoid smiling or talking in public. A complete smile can boost a person's confidence in social or business situations.

Enjoy the Convenience of Same-Day Dental Bridges

Thanks to CEREC® technology, our dentist can design and craft your dental bridge in just one appointment.

If a CEREC bridge is right for your individual case, precise digital impressions are taken during your visit and sent right to our on-site milling machine. Your crowns and pontics can be crafted from a solid block of high-quality dental porcelain in about an hour. Feel free to use our Wi-Fi hotspot to get some work done while you wait, or lie back and relax in our ultra-comfy dental chairs.

Some bridges, such as those made of special materials, need to be made in a dental lab and will take longer than a day to create. Whiteman Dental Associates proudly features our own fully equipped in-house dental lab to craft beautiful restorations.

Dental Bridge Care

/

In large part, your restoration can be cared for like natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and visit your dentist for twice-yearly cleanings. To floss under your bridge, use a floss threader or dental pick to clean the area between the pontics and gums.
