Candidates for Dental Bonding

Dental bonding can benefit both children and adults who have some form of minor dental damage, such as chipped or cracked teeth. Furthermore, bonding can effectively hide intrinsic stains or significant tooth discoloration that cannot be improved with teeth whitening. In some cases, dental bonding may also be used to close very minor gaps between teeth. In order to be considered a good candidate, you should have healthy teeth and gums and be a non-smoker. Dr. Whiteman will discuss the full benefits of dental bonding during a personal consultation and review other alternative treatments to determine if this procedure can best achieve your goals.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The material we use for dental bonding is the same used for tooth-colored fillings — a durable composite resin that closely mimics the look and sheen of natural enamel. Bonding is performed here at our practice, and the large majority of patients do not require local anesthesia. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Whiteman will compare your teeth against a color chart guide. Referring to this guide, he will then blend a coloring agent with liquid composite resin so that it closely matches the shade of your smile. We may also gently etch the teeth that will be treated to create an ideal bonding surface.

In most cases, an entire dental bonding procedure can be completed during a single appointment.

Once preparation is complete, Dr. Whiteman will carefully apply the bonding material to the surface of each tooth, filling in chips and cracks and hiding blemishes. Next, he will smooth and shape the resin using a small tool to achieve a highly natural look. Dr. Whiteman will then use a special curing light to harden the bonding material. After checking to ensure a proper bite, we will quickly polish the treated teeth to finish the procedure. In most cases, an entire dental bonding procedure can be completed during a single appointment.

Aftercare for Optimal Results

After treatment, you can care for your bonded teeth by brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. We recommend that bonding patients try to avoid chewing on hard items such as ice or pen caps, since this can sometimes cause the material to chip. By following Dr. Whiteman's aftercare instructions as closely as possible, you can help maintain the results of treatment for up to a decade.
