I'm Missing Teeth: What Are My Dental Treatment Options? By Daniel Whiteman D.M.D. on May 11, 2023

Tooth loss can affect your dental health as well as the appearance of your smile. Thankfully, at Whiteman Dental Associates in Brookline, MA, we offer different options for patients who are missing teeth. While getting dental implants to treat tooth loss tends to be the best option, we also offer traditional prosthodontic procedures.

Let’s compare dental procedures that can treat tooth loss. This will give you a good idea of the different treatments available and which one might be right for you.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically embedded into the jawbone. The implants fuse with the bone structure, offering a high level of stability. The implants can be used to support an individual crown for single-tooth replacement, a bridge, or even a full arch denture.

Many patients have benefited from getting implants at our Brookline dentistry practice. While the cost of dental implants can be high, patients often feel like they are a worthwhile investment in their oral health and overall quality of life.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge fills gaps in your smile. The dental prosthetic literally bridges the gap between teeth. It’s a good option for people who are missing one or two teeth in a row.

A traditional bridge consists of an artificial tooth (pontic) that is attached to at least one crown; the artificial tooth is often bookended by crowns. The teeth adjacent to the tooth gap are prepped so they can be capped by these crowns and hold the artificial tooth in place.

If you get an implant-supported bridge, the pontic will be supported by adjacent implant-supported crowns.

For people who are missing many teeth, dentures are a good option for major tooth loss. A partial denture helps fill major gaps between teeth and is attached to any remaining healthy teeth. A full denture can be used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth.

While removable dentures are effective, implant-supported dentures are much more stable. For a traditional implant-supported denture, six to eight implants may be required along the entire upper or lower dental arch.

All-on-4 Implant-Supported Dentures

In addition to implant-supported dentures, we also offer All-on-4® implants to support a full denture. The All-on-4 method can anchor a full arch denture in place using just four dental implants. Special oral scanning is used to plan the optimal implant placement for long-lasting results.

During a consultation at our practice, we can examine your jawbone density and determine if traditional dental implants or All-on-4 is a better option for your needs.
